UN STUDIU INTERTEXTUAL ASUPRA CÂNTECULUI ANEI DIN TARGUMUL PROFEȚILOR (1 SAM. 2:1–10) ȘI AL SECȚIUNII ARAMAICE DIN CARTEA DANIEL (DAN. 2–7) (AN INTERTEXTUAL STUDY ON HANNAH’S SONG FROM THE PROPHECY TARGUM (1 SAM. 2: 1-10) AND OF ARAMAIC SECTION FROM THE BOOK OF DANIEL (DAN. 2-7))

Daniel Olariu, Adventist Theological Institute & Hebrew University of Jerusalem; Şos. Decebal, nr. 11-13, Cernica, 077035, Ilfov, Romania

Rezumat: Cântării Anei (1 Sam. 2:1-10) i s-a acordat o atenție specială în ultimele decade.
Abstract: The aim of this study is to single out possible intertextual connections between the Song of Hannah in the Targums to the Prophets and the Aramaic section of the Book of Daniel. As such, the study highlights significant linguistic parallels, structural correspondences and thematic links which connect both compositions. Based on the evidences that have been presented, the study concludes that the Song of Hannah in the Targums to the Prophets reflects a reworked composition in accordance with the apocalyptic genre under the influence of the Aramaic section of Daniel.

‘ADMINISTRAREA ÎMPLINIRII TIMPURILOR’ – SPRE O FILOSOFIE BIBLICĂ A TIMPULUI – PARTEA I (‘ANNIVERSARY MANAGEMENT OF THE TIMES’ – TIME FOR A BIBLICAL PHILOSOPHY – PART I)

Adrian Petre, Adventist Theological Institute & Adventist International Institute of Advanced Studies; Şos. Decebal, nr. 11-13, Cernica, 077035, Ilfov, Romania

Abstract: This article is an introductory study in the philosophy of Time, trying to explore the biblical understanding of Time, as it appears in Genesis 1-3. The author states that Time is defined by God in its relation to Reality (Creation). With the Creation „day” featuring as a measurement unit, Time is closely connected with the events taking place within it. Before the Fall, there was no separation between the perception of Reality (phenomenon) and its own intrinsic nature (noumenon). For the Edenic humans, the Sabbath was given as a gift through which the past aspect of Time became a part of the present Reality. When the demonic snake redefined the relation between Time and Reality, there occurred a fracture between the perception of Reality and Reality itself. God had to intervene by administrating the events in human time so that He can restore the Reality as it was at the beginning.

DOCTRINA TRINITĂȚII ÎN PERIOADA PATRISTICĂ: PĂRINȚII BISERICEȘTI ȘI CONCILIUL DE LA NICEEA – PARTEA A II-A (THE TRINITY DOCTRINE DURING PATRISTIC PERIOD: CHURCH PARENTS AND THE NICEA COUNCIL – PART II-A)

Zoltan Szallos-Farkas, Adventist Theological Institute & University of Aberdeen Alumni; Şos. Decebal, nr. 11-13, Cernica, 077035, Ilfov, Romania

Hr.).
Abstract: The author has continued his research of the history of Trinitarian doctrine, the results of which are presented in this second part of the series. The historical and theological survey of the available data offered by primary sources has yielded sufficient ground to argue that the Church Fathers of the East and West, and the Ecumenical Councils, especially Nicea, had contributed, in a significant fashion, to the formation of two models of the Trinitarian understanding of God by the end of the patristic era (8th century). Their Trinitarian vocabulary, economic perspective, as well as perichoretic understanding of God have to be seen as a major stepping stone towards the crystalisation of the classical theistic doctrine of God. This is to say that Nicean and post-Nicean developments testify to an understanding of the Trinitarian relationship of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit that has been articulated in the language and vocabulary of the Early / Apostolic Fathers, to which new aspects have been added by the Cappadocian Fathers and Augustin. The study has evidenced that a clear chronologically viable ontological anteriority within the Godhead may be seen as being suggested by the language of “eternal generation”, “begotten-ness” and “procession”, a language the Church Fathers have accepted as theologically appropriate and sound, and deployed it in the wording of the Creed.

PRELIMINARII LA O ECONOMIE BIBLICĂ (PRELIMINARY TO A BIBLICAL ECONOMICS)

Dan Constantinescu, Adventist Theological Institute & Ecological University; Şos. Decebal, nr. 11-13, Cernica, 077035, Ilfov, Romania

Abstract: Scripture teaches us that God is the source of all sciences (Eccl. 2:26). We might argue that in biblical texts, the term „science” may refer to what we would call „consciousness” or „knowledge” today, of a practical and spiritual nature. Also, it may have negative overtones at times, denoting speculative or mystical knowledge. In other words, positively it may incorporate concepts such as skill, experience, philosophy etc. However, the statement above does not affect the meaning Solomon has given this concept in his teachings. Compared to the perfection of God, science can offer man only a limited amount of knowledge (Job 37:16, Ps. 139:6,1 Cor. 13:9). Yet, science is not limited only to enrich one’s cognitional database. Rather, it has also practical value for its owner (Pr. 8:9, Eccl. 7:12). But this practical value cannot be seen apart from God and His divine attributes. This is to say that science without God has no value in itself, and it may even be dangerous (Is. 47:10, Jer. 10:8, 1 Cor. 13:2). Having these premises, we have carried out the present research, whose main purpose is to argue for the compatibility of the conceptual binomial of religion and economics, and thus to show the legitimacy of harmonising the fundamentals of economics with biblical statements.

IDEOLOGICAL BACKGROUND OF EMPEROR CONSTANTINE’S RELIGIOUS POLICY

Tibor Tonhaizer, Hungarian Adventist Theological Institute; Raday u. 12, 2119 Pecel, Hungary

Abstract: By the middle of the 3rd century the once glorious Roman Empire was past its prime. It was considerably weakened both economically and socially. Emperor Constantine the Great expected the intensification of monotheistic religiousness to solve the severe–seemingly hopeless–situation. He was hardly familiar with matters of theology, but was quite sure that he can achieve the stability of his own power by combining the strongest religions of the Empire ideologically. In the spirit of this policy, Christianity and sun-worship got close to each other, and the emperor supported both. What is interesting about the aforementioned process of combining religions is that the Christians of the 4th century did not object to this tendency. On the contrary, they considered it to be the evidence of divine Providence

INFLUENȚA AMENINȚĂRII OTOMANE ASUPRA TEOLOGIEI IMINENȚEI PARUSIEI ÎN TIMPUL REFORMEI (INFLUENCE OTTOMAN THREAT THEOLOGY ON IMMINENT PARUSIA DURING THE REFORM)

Daniel Nitulescu, Adventist Theological Institute & Bucharest University; Şos. Decebal, nr. 11-13, Cernica, 077035, Ilfov, Romania

Abstract: Martin Luther’ slogan ”Better Turks than papists” captures his understanding of the significance of the Reformation. In light of the Reformer’s views concerning the Turkish threat, one could argue that the Era of Reformation has to be understood not simply as one more historical period of outstanding importance, but as the final divinely ordained step of church reform before the onset of the end of the world and the establishment of God’s everlasting kingdom. The study argues that if the “Turkish menace” is to be evaluated from “God’s viewpoint”, as a punishment for the sins of (the) Europe/ans, then the war against the Turks should be viewed as a total mistake because it would have meant to fight against God Himself. The study also argues that, unlike Luther, Calvin and Erasmus were much balanced in theirs views concerning the Ottoman invasion and conquest of Europe.

AR TREBUI FEMEILE SĂ FIE HIROTONITE CA PASTORI? CONSIDERAȚII ASUPRA VECHIULUI TESTAMENT – PARTEA A IV-A (‘SHOULD WOMEN BE ORDAINED AS PASTORS? OLD TESTAMENT CONSIDERATIONS’ – PART FOUR)

Richard M. Davidson, Andrews University8975 U.S. 31, Berrien Springs MI 49104, United States

Abstract: This is the last part of a four-part series of studies published in the previous issues of TheoRhēma on women ordination from an Old Testament perspective, including the eschatological future envisaged by the same. It has been argued that the OT witness regarding male-female relations in the covenant community indicates that despite the patriarchal culture and divine condescension to the hardness of human hearts, the way back to the Edenic ideal for equality in gender relations was upheld in that all the various kinds or positions of leadership according to God’s ideal were open to, and filled by, women: priest, prophet, elder, judge, military leader, sage, musician/worship leader, and preacher/proclaimer of the Word. Only the position of monarch was not open to women in Israel, but this was the one position not part of God’s original plan, and concerning which He warned would bring about an oppressive, hierarchical style of leadership. Outside of Israel, however, women such as the Queen of Sheba and Esther ably filled the royal role.

CUVINTELE LUI QOHÍLT BEN DAWÍD [971-931 Î. CH.], REGELE IERUSALIMULUI (THE TEACHINGS OF QOHELET BEN DAWID [971-931 B.C.], THE KING OF JERUSALEM)

Florin Laiu, Adventist Theological Institute; Şos. Decebal, nr. 11-13, Cernica, 077035, Ilfov, Romania

Abstract: This current work is a fresh translation of the Biblical book of Ecclesiastes into Romanian, with a few exegetical footnotes. The translation was made according to the following principles:
1. a critical approach to the Masoretic Text, which is a normal approach in any scientific translation from ancient languages;
2. a literary (artistic, aesthetical) rendering of the idea in Romanian.
Since the Masoretic Text shows both verses and prose in this book, as it is displayed in the critical editions of the Hebrew Bible, following Codex Leningradensis, the prose text was translated in prose and the poetic text was translated in poetry, as it is perceived by the common people today, with some prosodic elements – rhythm and rhyme – in spite of the usual absence of rhyme or rhythm in the original text. Such a translation cannot be literal, nor can the original text be mutilated for the rhyme’s sake. This is only a tentative approach.

SEMNE COMPORTAMENTALE ALE SFÂRŞITULUI VREMURILOR: IMINENŢA PARUSIEI ÎN 2 TIMOTEI 3:1-5 (THE BEHAVIORAL SIGNS OF THE END-TIMES: THE IMMANENCE OF THE PAROUSIA IN 2 TIM 3:1-5)

Laurentiu Mot, Adventist Theological Institute & Adventist International Institute of Advanced Studies Alumni; Şos. Decebal, nr. 11-13, Cernica, 077035, Ilfov, Romania

Abstract: The paper deals with the issue relating to the imminence of the Parousia based on 2 Timothy 3:1-5. It answers two questions. The first is how sure are the signs that are behavioural in nature to indicate the nearness of Jesus’ second coming? The second addresses the question of the relationship between the completeness of evil and its destruction? In order to answer the first question the study examines the profile of what could be called the eschatological human being described in 2 Tim 3:1-5. It also seeks to establish whether there is an instrument to measure the qualitative ripening of evil through successive ages of human history. Since it appears that there is no way to accurately assess the extent, intensity and gravity of evil, there seems to be no way to anticipate the eschatological end of the world on the basis of human wickedness. To answer the second question, the article analyses certain biblical typologies that have set wickedness and judgment in relation. The basic answer to this second question is that there is no direct, causal relationship between human evil and its extinction. There are other factors suggested that play a certain role in the fulfilment of the promise of Christ’s return.

PROTOTIPUL SPIRITUALITĂȚII ECHILATERALE: CĂTRE UN MODEL INTEGRATIV FAVORABIL GĂSIRII FERICIRII (A PROTOTYPE OF EQUILATERAL SPIRITUALITY: TOWARDS AND INTEGRATIVE MODEL ASSISTING IN THE PURSUIT OF HAPPINESS)

Daniel Olariu, Adventist Theological Institute & Hebrew University of Jerusalem; Şos. Decebal, nr. 11-13, Cernica, 077035, Ilfov, Romania

Abstract: Situated at the junction of Practical Theology and Sociology, this study builds on the assumption that, although relatively young, Adventist spirituality can contribute significantly to the discussion about the psychology of happiness. The study consists of three sections that have been constituted by applying an inductive reasoning. First, we have identified a number of important components that have shaped Adventist spirituality at a personal level (micro level). These are the Christian commitment to personal character formation determined by the urgency of the second advent, the importance of health as a fundamental component of personal well-being, individual responsibility for personal gifts and talents, and a growing awareness of the needs of the world, coupled with the moral obligation to address them. In the second section, all these elements are integrated into a coherent model called, “The Equilateral Spirituality Prototype,” which brings clarity and focus to the discussion on “happiology.” Thirdly, the study explores the contribution of the model in different areas of research such as sociology, theology, education, leadership, spiritual formation, and religion. It is the contention of this study that only when we come up with a functional model at the microlevel can we then infer general principles in different areas of study at a macro level.

DOCTRINA TRINITĂȚII ÎN PERIOADA PATRISTICĂ – PARTEA I (THE DOCTRINE OF TRINITY IN THE PATRISTIC PERIOD – FIRST PART)

Zoltan Szallos-Farkas, Adventist Theological Institute & University of Aberdeen Alumni; Şos. Decebal, nr. 11-13, Cernica, 077035, Ilfov, Romania

Abstract: The purpose of the current article is to make an inventory of all the varied references to Seventh-day Adventists in the Romanian literature (belles-letters) of the 20th century. Further to the aforementioned is the aim to highlight those definitive characteristics of Adventists which such references capture, thus drawing up a profile of the same, one that persists in the collective consciousness of the larger community (Romanian society made up of mainly eastern orthodox citizens), of which Adventists are integral part.

RECENZIE BIBLIOGRAFICA – PRÖBSTLE, MARTIN. HIMMEL AUF ERDEN: GOTT BEGEGNET UNS IM HEILIGTUM. ST. PETER, AUSTRIA: SEMINAR SCHLOSS BOGENHOFEN, 2013

Gerhard Pfandl, Tradus de Florin Iacob; Biblical Research Institute; 12501 Old Columbia Pike, Silver Spring, MD 20904, United States

ISTEN ORSZÁGA JÉZUS PRÉDIKÁLÁSÁBAN ÉS MUNKÁSSÁGÁBAN (THE KINGDOM OF GOD IN THE PREACHING AND MINISTRY OF JESUS)

Laszlo Gallusz, Hungarian Adventist Theological Institute; Raday u. 12, 2119 Pecel, Hungary

Abstract: The current piece of research has evidenced that the concept of the Kingdom of God / Kingdom of Heaven is not new in the biblical theology of the human writers of the Scripture. However, Jesus of Nazareth has given the concept a rather central importance in his kerygma. Three fundamental meanings have been attached to it: (1) the Kingdom is inseparably attached to Christ’s Person, (2) the Kingdom is the present realisation of Jesus’ future eschatology and (3) Christ extends the teachings of the Kingdom to all ethnic groups and peoples, thus establishing its universality.

COORDONATE BIBLICE ALE SISTEMELOR DE EVIDENȚĂ STATISTICĂ ȘI ECONOMICO-FINANCIARĂ (BIBLICAL COORDINATES OF STATISTICAL AND ECONOMICO-FINANCIAL RECORDS)

Dan Constantinescu, Adventist Theological Institute & Ecological University; Şos. Decebal, nr. 11-13, Cernica, 077035, Ilfov, Romania

Abstract: Without ignoring the messianic idea, widely exploited in theological disciplines, we consider the Bible to be – in its entirety – the foundation and a coherent configuration for numerous scientific disciplines, including disciplines of an economic nature. If for the methods of statistical observation the Bible reserves ample space, for the most commonly used method, that of total observation, known as census („to number”, KJV), it accords equal importance by linking it to the practice of recording of financial and economic operations. The aforementioned practice is generally related to the Biblical manager’s profile („steward” – KJV), whose duty was to conduct a delegated administrative activity and, according to the function of management evaluation and control, to assume accountability to the owner or his legal representative. We see, therefore, explicit reference to the existence of a written document, precursor of modern accounting documents, as well as reference to archiving of documents, adapted to the specific time. In addition, the „reckoning” in the biblical text does not represent a simple overall record, but was analytically organized according to several criteria.

DOCTRINA BIBLICĂ DESPRE DUMNEZEU. O ANALIZĂ EXEGETICĂ ȘI TEOLOGICĂ A DATELOR (THE BIBLICAL DOCTRINE OF GOD: AN EXEGETICAL AND THEOLOGICAL ANALYSIS)

Zoltan Szallos-Farkas, Adventist Theological Institute & University of Aberdeen Alumni; Şos. Decebal, nr. 11-13, Cernica, 077035, Ilfov, Romania

Abstract: The exegetical and theological analysis of the available biblical data has yielded sufficient ground to argue that there is a Trinitarian plurality of Persons in the Godhead, whose immanent and eternal relationship is rooted in their ontological, not only ethical, agape love (1John 4:8,16). Based on biblical data, one cannot postulate any chronologically viable ontological anteriority within the Godhead suggested by the language of “begotten-ness” and “procession” of the Niceean creed (325 A.D.), neither can one envisage any subordination through ontogenesis in the inner life of the Trinity. This is so because, as argued in this study, the Scripture explains the eternal relationship between the persons of the Godhead by grounding it in the ontological category of agape love. To this mystery of the ontoagapic relationship of continual fascination, delight and pleasure, experienced by the three Persons of the Godhead, points, albeit dimly, the binitarian man’s (Adam and Eve) marital relationship of love, delight and pleasure experienced before, during and after their sexual intimacy.

SUPERNATURALLY INFUSED OR NATURALLY EMERGED SOUL? A STUDY OF THE APPEAL OF THEISTIC EVOLUTIONIST SYSTEMS TO DUAL ANTHROPOLOGY

Gheorghe Razmerita, Adventist University of Chile

The article studies the relationship between theistic evolutionism and the dualistic and sinful aspects of the human nature. This engagement proves essential to Adventist theology, with its particular creationism and anthropology. Two questions stand out in this study. First, how do the concepts of dualism and sin affect theistic evolutionism? Could some Adventist theologians who may be tempted to accept theistic evolutionism remain consistent with their biblical anthropology and still embrace theistic evolutionism? Besides the introduction and conclusion, the article is structured in three major sections: theistic evolutionist systems that integrate dualism, theistic evolutionist systems that do not integrate dualism, and an assessment of both options. Theistic evolutionist proposals for reconciling scientific evolutionism and Christian theology have become more noticeable to the general public when Pope John Paul II “shocked” the world with an explicit acceptance of the theistic evolutionist position in his 22 October 1996 address to the Pontifical Academy of Sciences. His presentation increased the ongoing debate over theistic evolutionism with a resulting explosion of works pro or con.
